Description

My name is Milica and I am from Kraljevo, a city that is modern today but jealously guards its tradition and relies on it. In Kraljevo, houses are still named after the owners who died at the beginning of the 20th century, our center with a monument to fallen soldiers in the Serbian and First World War is the center of all gatherings and no one calls it anything other than Milutin. We lean on the Valley of the Kings, Žiča and Studenica are our pride and our past, but also a pledge for the future.

The history of my city is inseparable from Nemanjić dynasty, the city grew up at the confluence of the Ibar and Morava rivers, leaning on the endowments of Nemanjić dynasty and inheriting the tradition of the old state of Raška and Serbia. All Serbian kings were crowned in Žiča, it was the seat of the first archbishopric. Studenica, a white beauty, is a pearl of architecture, but everyone knows that, and I want to tell you a story that is less known, and which we have decided to preserve and turn into a beautiful tradition for future generations:

Uroš I Nemanjić was supposed to marry Helen of Anjou, a French princess. Waiting for her the king planted fragrant lilacs along the road she was supposed to take to her new home. The Ibar gorge smelled that spring, and the foaming Ibar wanted to welcome the new Serbian queen. Even today, wild lilacs grow in the part of the Ibar gorge which we all call the Lilac Valley. Every citizen of Kraljevo knows that story. Since 1993, there has been a manifestation of Lilac Days. On April 26, we gather at Milutin’s and whoever can go for the carriage in which the young man and girl who represent Uroš and Helena that year. (picture 1) Many times, when I was very young, I moved with a wreath of lilacs on my head (picture 2). The escort goes to Graz, another monastery in the Serbian Valley of the Kings, which is the endowment of Helen of Anjou. The central manifestation takes place below Maglič, a medieval fortress on the narrowest part of the Ibar gorge, which was once the defense of Žiča (picture 3). All the youth of the Kraljevo rush under the medieval walls. We all remember whose descendants we are, that our rulers welcomed their wives not with bouquets and jewels, they welcomed them with a state planted in fragrant flowers. We remind ourselves that we are not barbarians from the Balkans, but descendants of the people who, in honor of their Queen Helena, spread lilacs all over the country. Queen Helena brought the spirit of French culture to our country, she was a humanitarian and she helped and taught female children.

The legend I grew up with says that Jelena, according to the customs of the time, did not see Uroš for the first time, then under Maglič, where he was welcomed, but his gesture of a ruler and a man bound her inextricably to him and Serbia. In Kraljevo, it is hardly possible to find a slightly larger yard without lilacs. Whenever lilac smells in Belgrade (where I live now), I remember our lilacs. I’m sad then. Now I can rarely leave, but I know that my younger sister with a wreath of lilacs in her hair is in the procession and I am looking forward to it. And I am firmly determined that as soon as I return home, I will work on getting more people acquainted with this beautiful event, on becoming not only a Kraljevo but also a Serbian tradition. Even in the world, few rulers felt such love for their future wife and respect for planting miles and miles of fragrant flowers. Our Lilac Days are an ode to love.

Opis

I danas rastu samonikli jorgovani u delu Ibarske klisure koju svi zovemo Dolina jorgovana. Svaki kraljevčanin tu priču zna. Od 1993. Postoji manifestacija Dani jorgovana. 26.
